The scheme means that you have guaranteed rental income for over 10 years in most cases. If you can find a local mortgage, chances are that you would be able to pay off the apartment or villa and have yourself a retirement home at the end of it.
Some schemes allow personal use which can be great for holidays, but it does mean reduced returns, so you need to calculate carefully.
