The Cardinal Rules of Running Your Own Business

If you are setting out on your own venture, of whatever type, there are certain rules that you should stick to in order to give you the highest chances of success. Firstly hard work and dedication is a must.

It is easy to get distracted when you are your own boss, to start surfing the web and losing sight of what you should be doing; being tempted by every link that says click here.

Secondly, you have to be organised and to manage your priorities as they should be managed.

When you have a pile of paperwork it is tempting to get the easy or interesting bits done first, instead of the ones that you should be doing. Prioritise to ensure that things that bring you in revenue are done first and the less important things can follow when you have time.

Look at the eighty twenty rule – it is twenty per cent of your customers that give you eighty per cent of your business, so make sure that you spend the time to keep your most valuable clients happy. It is easier to retain existing clients than find new ones.

Thirdly, if you have employees, treat them with respect and fairness but with firmness. Set the tone for how you mean to go on. If you treat them too informally or give them too much freedom it is human nature to take more. You have to run a tight ship.
